Potential impact of the 2020 German fertilizer legislation on the production of E-wheat in Germany

In 2020, the European Union required Germany to take new measures to control water pollution caused by nitrates from agricultural sources, in accordance with the Nitrates Directive.

This new legislation complements an earlier legislation adopted in 2016 because measures taken following the earlier legislation were deemed insufficient by the European Union.

This new legislation reinforces the constraints on fertiliser inputs and has a potential impact on the production of high protein soft wheat, mainly type E-wheat. This study (28 pages) aims to put into perspective the principal measures taken in 2016 and those adopted in 2020, as well as proposing several potential scenarios concerning production of E-wheat (volumes and protein content) in Germany until 2025.

This study is a continuation of our earlier study on the same topic published when the first legislation was enacted in 2016.
